Green Parties Across the Country Celebrate the November 2013 Election with Both New Elected Greens and Re-elected Greens

California: Sixteen California Greens were elected to local government on November 5th, bringing to 18 elected overall in 2013, an all-time high for the party in an odd-numbered year – and bringing to 54 the number of California Greens currently holding public office statewide.

Maine: Anna Trevorrow [Portland Green] won a School Board seat  and Josh Plourde [Bangor Green] won a City Council seat.  The Portland Greens endorsed Legalization of Marijuana in Portland. It passed with 67% of the vote.  The Portland law will allow residents, 21 and older, to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. This will open the way for a state wide ballot item on state legalization in 2016.

More results are coming in.  Before this election the total number of Greens holding elected office was 132, representing 24 states and the District of Columbia.  In Tennessee we don’t have any elected Greens yet, but 2012 was our biggest year by far for the number of people stepping up to run.  We had 12 candidates in 2012 with several bringing in higher percentages than we had ever received before.  Unopposed elections are our best bet for getting folks in to office.  Let the Party leaders know if you are ready to run!  We’ll be there for you!
